Our Review of Make-A-Wish® Visa® Platinum

The Make A Wish Visa credit card, issued by Bank of America, is a rewards card for those with good to excellent credit who are interested in contributing to a worthy charitable cause. The benefits of this reward card program go directly to the Make A Wish Foundation, an acclaimed charity that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. With the Make A Wish Visa card, .65% of each purchase is donated to the charity and a $2.00 donation is made with each new opened and activated account.

The Make A Wish Visa card has a 1.9% introductory APR for the first 6 months, which applies to all purchases and balance transfers. After the first 6 months, the APR is variable based on your credit history and account limit. However, the APR for transactions is based on the Highest Prime Rate during each three month period. This means the APR for this card may never reach the lowest possible rate. Even with this fact, the APR for the Make A Wish Visa can remain relatively low in comparison to other comparable credit cards, provided the cardholder's credit standing is good.

A very large benefit of this card is the fact that there are no annual fees, program fees, or balance transfer fees at any time. This card also has a free online banking service for keeping track of your transactions and payments. Cardholders will also receive various Platinum member privileges, including auto rental insurance, zero liability for unauthorized charges, Purchase Guard warranties on certain types of purchases, and emergency medical and travel assistance services. Cardholders will also receive a free mini-card with their standard Make A Wish Visa. There is a 20 day grace period during which finance charges do not accumulate on new purchases.

Fees associated with this card are fairly standard, including a late payment fee of $19 to $39 depending on the amount overdue, a $35 fee for going over the credit limit, and a 3% cash advance fee with a minimum of $10. These amounts are for the most part equal to or slightly lower than the fees charged by credit cards of comparable standing.

For those with very stable credit history who are willing to pay their balance due on each billing cycle as often as possible (to avoid the accumulation of interest), the Make A Wish Visa card is a solid choice. It has the added benefit of contributing a fairly large percentage of each sale to a worthy cause, which for many will outweigh the negatives of a slightly higher APR or the lack of extraordinary platinum benefits.
