If GE Consumer Finance and Mejier Stores have their way, swiping your credit card will soon by a thing of the past. Mejier and GE recently announced that all Mejier stores will accept MasterCard PayPass at all 171 of its locations. The announcement makes Mejier Stores, one of the country's fastest growing privately owned companies, the first major retail superstore chain to adopt the new MasterCard PayPass technology. By fall, Mejier will also have equipped all the company's gas pumps to accept the MasterCard PayPass as well. Mejier is a family owned grocery and general merchandise super center retailer with 171 stores throughout the Mid-Western United States.
"MasterCard PayPass is part of Mejier's continuing efforts to invest in solutions for serving customers quickly and efficiently," said Michael Ross, director of marketing and customer relationship management for Mejier Stores.
The PayPass MasterCard utilizes a new 'Tap and Go' technology that allows customers to simply tap their PayPass-enabled MasterCard against a special terminal. The terminal uses a radio-frequency (RF) chip to transmit details of the purchase through the terminal to the system, and back to the terminal. Within seconds of tapping the PayPass enabled card to the terminal, account details are transmitted and the transaction is processed and completed.
In tandem with the announcement, Mejier also announced that they will soon be offering a PayPass-enabled Mejier Platinum MasterCard. Issued by GE Consumer Finance, the card will combine all the perks and benefits of an in-store credit card with the widespread acceptance of a standard MasterCard. Customers who opt to use a Mejier MasterCard will have access to exclusive sales, promotional offers and in-store rewards, plus national acceptance of a MasterCard, competitive APRs and cash-back rewards for all purchases, not just those made at Mejier stores.
The new partnership is a win-win situation, according to representatives of both companies.
"We're excited about the rapid growth of our relationship with Mejier and making shopping as quick and convenient as possible for their consumers," said Margaret Keane, president and CEO of the Retail Consumer Finance unit of GE Consumer Finance.
"Enabling the Mejiir Platinum MasterCard with PayPass enhances the customer experience in-store and at the pump," says Fred P. Gore, a senior Vice President for MasterCard International.
MasterCard PayPass is currently accepted at numerous stores across the country, including McDonalds, 7-Eleven and CVS.
